At Orchards, we are positioned in an area with a high volume of period properties, dating back centuries; even the local market has been around for 800 years. We are in a locality that combines its history with easy and convenient modern living.
When we read about a show home in County Durham being fitted with second-hand items from the British Heart Foundation’s charity shops, we were inspired by this idea. Except for those living in a new build, most of our homes are second hand at the very least. So why don’t we embrace this charitable and sustainable approach more broadly into our lifestyles? We would more likely redecorate our homes before contemplating knocking down and replacing them, and it can be the same with your furnishings to create a unique new look.
The Bishop Auckland show home features an array of upcycled and used furniture, all showcasing the space fantastically and creating a property that really appeals to buyers –while giving back to charity at the same time. If you are getting ready to sell or let your home, or it is taking a little longer to reach an offer, why not think about redecorating with some pre-loved items that won’t break the bank, but will help both the environment and charities too.
Last year, the BHF saved 71,000 tonnes of goods from going to waste, helping prevent 135,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions being released into the atmosphere, as well as raising vital funds for life-saving research.
Here, local interior styling company, B R Styling, gives us some tips:
“Upcycling can be so much more than painting and upholstering. For me, part of the fun of upcycling is in the details. By sourcing quirky drawer pulls from independent interior stores, or finding the perfect cabinet legs to transform an unloved piece, you create something personal and unique, that you can continue to develop as your tastes change.
If you fancy bringing something completely different into your home, think about new purposes for old pieces. Start by trawling junk shops and online marketplaces to find exciting upcycling opportunities. For example, church pews can be a great statement for an entrance hall – you can polish or distress yourself, and add soft cushions to fit with the rest of your home’s style.
Whatever project you decide to take on, the best pieces will come from experimentation and taking risks. You can always repaint and replace parts. It’s about embracing your creativity, as well as reusing and recycling.”
